The story of my engagement

I honestly don’t know where to begin! (Sorry if this is badly written – I’m an over excited newly engaged 23-year-old!)

About a month ago James told me he had been offered some more work as a Production Assistant, but that I was going to be starring in this commercial, which was for BC Tourism. He told me that we wouldn’t be paid, but that we would be staying in luxury accommodation free of charge. I was a bit apprehensive, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to be on T.V, but a few days later James told me the plans had changed and he would be in the commercial too. Hearing this made me relax, so I agreed to do it.

A few weeks passed by and I still didn’t really know what was happening with regard to the commercial shoot. I’d booked the time off work and so had James – he just seemed to be a little out of the loop. Suddenly he told me we would be filming in Tofino, on Vancouver Island. I was SO excited as we went to Tofino for my 21st birthday & I loved it there so much! I googled the best places to stay and came across The Wickaninnish Inn. This place looked incredible, and I rambled away to James about how amazing it would be if we were staying there…

On Sunday June 3rd we packed our cases and drove towards Vancouver to catch the ferry from Tsawwassen to Nanaimo. I was still unaware of where we were staying and believed James was too. I began to panic, thinking maybe they’d forgotten to book us somewhere and we’d be stuck in some crummy motel but James told me not to be so daft and like a fool I believed every word he said. Sunday night we stayed at Travelodge in Nanaimo, which wasn’t amazing but we were so shattered from the long drive (and me from trying not to be sick on the ferry!) that we didn’t care.

Monday morning we woke up to a cloudy sky and I was a little disappointed, as I remembered the drive to Tofino being really beautiful and would have loved some clear skies to really compliment the scenery. Never the less we set off and by the time we’d reached Port Alberni (for a Tim Horton’s stop – on Helen Street!) the clouds were beginning to disperse. I took over the driving so James was free to make any calls if he needed to, and also so he could tell me where to go once we got to Tofino.

A couple of hours later we were driving through the beautiful Pacific Rim National Park. I was still rambling on about all the really amazing places to stay and how it would be so cool if it was the Wickaninnish that we would be staying in, so when we took a left off the highway, signposted towards the Wickaninnish I went crazy!! Sure enough, this was where we were staying. I even joked that James had missed a great opportunity to propose to me here! I couldn’t quite believe this was happening so I made James go and check us in. A few minutes later he came out along with a staff member who put our cases on a gold trolley (this had never happened to me before so once again I went a little crazy!). This was nothing compared to our room though…

It was on two floors, with a full kitchen, living room, dining area, balcony, bedroom and two bathrooms! All overlooking Chesterman Beach. We had a couple of hours to explore the hotel before the camera crew for the commercial arrived, so we took a walk along the beach.

When the crew arrived I was suddenly really nervous! I met them all and they seemed like really nice people so I relaxed a bit, until the cameras were rolling and they were filming us, answering questions about ourselves and our relationship and why we think Tofino is a romantic place to visit as a couple. After we’d finished filming the interviews we went to hire out a couple of surfboards and wetsuits and headed to Cox Bay to do some filming of the two of us surfing. This is what I thought was the highlight of the tourism commercial, as they specifically chose to go to Tofino because we can surf, so I was really surprised that they only filmed us for about fifteen minutes before we headed back to the Wick to warm up and go and grab some dinner.

The next morning we split up and I headed into Tofino to film some touristy shots along the waterfront and in the town centre. James stayed at the hotel to film something ‘manly’ that you could do while staying in Tofino. When we got back a couple of hours later he told me he’d built a fire on the beach and cooked some salmon using it. I believed him, of course….

That afternoon we got changed into smarter clothes and were driven (in the hotel’s Lexus!) just around the corner to the Wick’s private beach where we were going to be filmed having a romantic lunch, which we were told was a package the hotel offered. On the beach was a table set for two, along with the film crew and a couple of staff members from the hotel. We sat down to eat our lunch, which was the fanciest lunch I’ve ever eaten in my life!

They brought over the pudding, which I ate of course (it had chocolate on it!). I did notice that my plate was on a piece of driftwood and James’s wasn’t, but I didn’t really think much of it, just like when James had told me not to touch the props on the table (some shells) because he had moved them and they got annoyed with him, but I was about to find out the real reason…

After we’d eaten the pudding James pointed out the whole driftwood thing and moved my plate off the piece of wood… Carved into it was ‘MARRY ME’.

I still thought we were filming for BC Tourism at this point, and thought wow, they’re really pushing this whole Tofino is romantic thing – a staged proposal?! But then James lifted up one of the shells, and underneath was an engagement ring. He walked to my side, got down on one knee and then I knew it was real! I cried my eyes out like a complete fool and of course I said yes!

The driftwood, the shell & my ring

I was SO confused as to what in the world was happening and why they were still filming, when James told me he should introduce me to who these people really are… I started to feel very freaked out! The crew then told me who they really were and what they were really filming for…

Shaw TV (a Canadian channel) have just been advertising a new show called The Proposal, where they help a man (or woman) plan the perfect proposal… James had wanted to ask me in a way I would always remember (not that I would ever forget anyway!) and by contacting and being on the show he could give me a proposal and a few days in Tofino to remember. I still can’t believe this has happened and I feel so overwhelmed by everything! I think it will take a little while to sink in, maybe until the pilot episode (which will be us) is broadcast in the autumn.

So there we go, that was my insane last few days!

Quite literally hitting the slopes…

My second week of snowboarding didn’t seem to go as well as my first. I think I’d got so excited that last week went so well that I’d convinced myself this week would be even better, but I got ahead of myself & fell over a lot which knocked my confidence & led to me becoming more & more frustrated. I’d managed only one run before we stopped for lunch & I was annoyed at myself & felt like giving up for the day. After a warming lunch I felt better, so we set off again & I (rather reluctantly at first) found myself back at the top of the mountain strapping the board back to my feet. The few runs we managed in the afternoon felt much better than the morning & I found my confidence returning. That was until the very last run of the day…

I don’t even recall what happened but the front edge of the board got caught in the snow & I subsequently flipped over & landed on my head. Thank goodness for my helmet is all I can say, as even with that on I still had a headache for the rest of the night (not to mention the pain in my lower back from the ridiculous amount of falling on my bum!). Ah well, I have a week to recover from the aches before I add more next week!

Remind me why I have a board strapped to my feet….

So today I tried my hand at snowboarding for the very first time. As I drove up to Big White I began to wonder why I’d decided to ditch my beloved skis for something new….

What do you mean I fell over?! I wanted to sit down...

Something which, from watching James over the last few weeks, is hard to learn & involves a lot of time sitting down, whether you want to or not! Despite all of this I found myself on the bunny slope, inwardly praying that I wouldn’t plough into any of the tiny tots having lessons with their parents (who were giving me the evil eye!). Well, it actually went better than expected! I had got incredibly frustrated a couple of times when I wanted to go on my back edge but my front edge got stuck in a pile of snow, so I ended up on my face a fair few times, as well as on my bum (this happened a lot throughout the course of the day!) but other than that it was a case of so far so good. With that, James (who was a great teacher & more patient than I perhaps deserved!) & I headed up the mountain for me to try out my new skills (!) on a proper slope. I managed to come down the run ok, avoiding colliding with other learners (just!) & only falling a few dozen times.

Contemplating my next move (how to get up without falling back down...)

Next came the part I’d been dreading more than anything else – getting on & off the lift. I can do this perfectly on skis but on a board it’s a different story entirely. I panicked the whole way up & convinced myself something would go wrong, so naturally it did. I didn’t get my left foot onto my board in time so ended up almost hopping off the lift, my board (along with my right leg) got ahead of me & I ended up on the floor, but at least I wasn’t hurt in any way. Once I was reattached to my board we set off again, down an even steeper slope. I was really enjoying myself as I’d got the hang of how to do ‘falling leaf‘, so I was away & having a whale of a time. Even falling didn’t spoil my day as there was so much fresh snow it was like falling onto a pillow (although a bit colder!). Once our time up the hill came to an end, I took off my board, emptied the snow I’d collected out of my trousers & headed back to the car for a more relaxed journey home. Bring on next week!!

The bluest skies….

On top of the world. Well, on top of Big White!

Sunday morning in West Kelowna was grey & foggy, but the webcams up at Big White were showing clear blue skies, so we packed up the car & headed up to the mountain. As we left Kelowna we drove through the low clouds & in to bright sunshine. It remained that way all day & it was a perfect days skiing.

Views don't get much better than this!

Arriving back in to cloud covered Kelowna.

It’s been too long…

Hello again little blog! It’s been a while…

Everything in Canada is going well! The weather is gradually getting warmer (fingers crossed -29 stays away!), my job is going really well & my family will be here for their visit in less than 2 months!

Up in the clouds at Big White Ski Resort

When we’re not working (& I’m not ‘accidentally’ shopping…) we head up to the ski hill or go for snowy hikes in our local area. I’ve taken a few impressive tumbles up at Big White recently & have been attempting to go off a few jumps & off-piste between the trees, which has been great fun but has so far ended up with me looking like a giant snowball as I roll down the hill! James has made vast improvements with his snowboarding & he doesn’t fall half as much as I do!

That's a lot of snow!

A couple of weeks ago we took Belle for a snowy hike up in the mountains of Westbank, not far from Crystal Mountain. The snow was (by an English girl’s standard) SO deep! Belle loved it, but did disappear a few times!

As for my baking, I haven’t done that much lately but I have become slightly addicted to Betty Crocker brownies! I know it’s cheating to use a ready made mixture but it tastes SO good! I made some experimental cookies recently, using my regular cookie mix but threw in some cocoa powder & some mini marshmallows. They looked a bit odd when they came out the oven but they actually tasted pretty great! I’ll be sure to make some more very soon!

I’ve got snow in my pocket

So Christmas has come & gone & 2011 is almost over. This was my second Christmas away from England & although I missed my family an awful lot it was still a happy, fun (& turkey) filled day. I had been at work Christmas Eve so I felt I deserved the couple of glasses of wine I had once I was home. Christmas morning soon arrived & before long we were opening gifts & talking with our families on Skype (Oh Skype, how I love you!). I had my Christmas day chocolate breakfast, (this year it was an entire chocolate orange) & before long we were tucking in to our roast dinner. In the evening we had a few glasses of wine & played some games. I went to bed as early as I possibly could to get a good nights sleep in preparation for what waited for me the following morning…

It was 4.30am when my alarm woke me up & it was 5.15am when I left the house to get to the mall. I would like to point out that I was off to the mall to work, not to shop! As tired as I was it was such a fun shift at work, from 9.30am onwards the customers arrived non-stop until I left at 2.30pm. Once I was home I only had to time to eat some lunch, pack an overnight bag & we were off up to Big White Ski Resort for the night. We had a great evening staying with friends in their condo, but I was so tired I ended up falling asleep on the floor in the middle of a dramatic (!) game of Trivial Pursuit.

James getting ready for the first run of the day

We were woken up on the morning of the 27th by Belle, who had come with us to the condo, barking at some skiers she could see out the window. After a delicious cooked breakfast we hit the slopes.

Me all ready to ski!

There had been 6cm of snow overnight & it was still falling, so there was a lot of fresh powder. This resulted in me continually doing the splits as my skis went either side of piles of powder & I eventually ended up doing the inevitable & crashing quite spectacularly, filling my coat pockets with snow as I did!

James boarding through the mist

We were heading back up the mountain on one of the chair lifts when the mist fell, this made the run down the slope much more interesting! By the time we made it back to the lift I realised my hair & hat had frozen!

My frozen hat & hair!

After our day up the mountain I headed off to work for a couple of hours. Luckily I start late today so I finally managed to catch up on some much needed sleep!!

Get ready for Big White!

The last couple of weeks have been crammed full of hours at work as Christmas creeps ever closer & the store gets busier and busier! It’s been fun though & it feels great to be helping people with their Christmas shopping (even though I haven’t managed to begin mine yet!).

Last week brought James’s 24th birthday, which was a great day! I had booked the day off work so I could decorate the house, bake him some birthday cupcakes & cookies & prepare a birthday tea! We had a lovely evening & James was very grateful for his presents (including snowboarding boots & bindings!).

James sets off on his board

It was a good job James recieved his boarding essentials as on Sunday we headed up to Big White Ski Resort! We picked up our season passes & we were off! I haven’t skiied for 2 years & James has barely any experience on a board, so we were both quite nervous! It all came back to me after the initial tenative first run (besides falling over while being stood still – don’t ask how!) & James did brilliantly with his boarding (with a little tuition from his sister – a great boarder).

I'm not entirely sure how I got myself into this mess!

We managed a few runs before the cloud set in & the breeze picked up, making it feel a lot colder than it was, so we headed back home as the sun began to set over the mountains. It still feels crazy that this is going to be a weekly activity for the next 5 months, & I can’t believe how lucky I am to have such a fantastic adventure playground on my doorstep!

All wrapped up & ready to ski!

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…

One of our many Christmas trees!

You know it’s ‘that time of year’ when twinkly lights appear on houses & giant reindeer on wheels roll past you in the mall… At work we’ve had Christmassy music playing for at least 3 weeks but I was still unprepared for the craziness of Canada’s ‘Black Friday’. American Eagle offered 40% off your entire purchase so work was hectic! Add that the to the grand opening of Kelowna’s new Best Buy and the arrival of Father Christmas to the mall & you are asking for chaos! We had queues (or should I say line ups) right round the store, for the fitting rooms as well as the cash desk. I have to admit that although it was hard work I did have fun & really enjoyed how busy it was!

We spent Sunday putting up Christmas decorations around the house, it now looks beautifully Christmassy! There are lights everywhere, little ornaments and to top it all off we have four Christmas trees!

Sunday evening & Monday morning were spent writing my Christmas cards & wrapping presents to be posted home to my family then it was off to Post Office followed by a long shift at work.

Now I have to put Christmas to the back of my mind for a week as it’s James’s birthday but I’ve yet to think of anything for him as I’ve been so wrapped up in Christmas! Hopefully he has a few gift ideas I can use…

Welcome to the Snowkanagan…

The snow didn’t decide to disappear overnight. Instead it decided to fall even heavier. Luckily on Thursday we all began work at similar times to I was able to be driven in to Kelowna by James’s parents & picked up by his sister. The snow seemed to hold off throughout the day on Thursday, but when we woke this morning we were greeted by a fresh blanket of snow, with 5-10cm more predicted to arrive during Friday. I decided to take advantage of my day off by snuggling under a blanket & catching up with the latest episode of Glee before wrapping up warm to take Belle out for a snowy walk. I took my camera with me to capture the first real snowfall in the Okanagan…

Snow topped plants

With the average temperature for today at -1 celsius it looks like the snow is set to stay falling for the remainder of the day, but as long as the weather man is right we should be snow free until Tuesday, which is fine by me!
